Human BioSciences, Inc. recently opened a $150 million facility in Martinsburg, West Virginia, to help it keep up with demand and prepare for international expansion. The company makes collagen-based wound care products used in more than 6,000 hospitals, health clinics, nursing homes, and other medical facilities. These products help hundreds of thousands of patients each year, with more people discovering their value every day.
“We are currently working on a two-year backlog of orders,” says Dr. Rohan Jain, President of Human BioSciences. “We found the Martinsburg buildings and thought they were a perfect fit. We have already renovated two of them, and will need to add more staff soon.”
Human BioSciences will create up to 250 jobs in the community, many of which don’t require previous experience in the health science field. This company can shape the bioscience industry in Martinsburg while improving patient care worldwide.
Human BioSciences sells Kollagen™ products, which replicate collagen made by the human body. According to Dr. Jain, the standard of wound care hadn’t changed much since WWII until Dr. Manoj K. Jain (Rohan’s father) launched the company 38 years ago. For decades, best practices involved keeping wounds clean, safe, and moist so the body could heal on its own. Human BioSciences creates products that help the body do its job.
Collagen makes up 60% of the human body’s dry weight and is said to be stronger than steel. The products from Human BioSciences mimic the collagen the body produces – and your body doesn’t know the difference. This process helps people heal faster, prevents scarring, and can be invaluable for people with autoimmune conditions like diabetes.
“Every single wound, no matter whether it’s a papercut or an amputation, follows the same healing process,” says Dr. Jain. “We offer over-the-counter wound care for minor cuts while also creating products for diabetic wound ulcers.” He adds that people with diabetes who use Kollagen™ products can heal in up to 95% of cases, potentially preventing 85% of amputations.
With more medical facilities purchasing Kollagen™ products, the Human BioSciences team needed to expand to keep up. This prompted company leaders to look for new campuses, which led them to Martinsburg.
The Martinsburg facility will allow Human BioSciences to scale its operations and become a world-leading provider of wound-care products. It currently has a factory in Maryland at capacity, preventing the firm from meeting demand. Human BioSciences started production in Martinsburg in early May, and its capacity has already doubled what it can produce in Maryland.
“There’s going to be a lot of activity here soon as we start ramping up,” says Dr. Jain.
Human BioSciences came to Martinsburg to scale its production while operating affordably, enabling the company to compete in the Chinese market. Currently, around 95% of medical consumable supplies in the United States come from China. Human BioSciences expects to take up about half of that market. However, the company needs to offer more than just a good product and advanced technology; it also needs to compete on cost. The Martinsburg facility will allow Human BioSciences to fairly price its products while ensuring its operations are profitable.
Dr. Jain and his team worked very closely with the City of Martinsburg to relocate to the area, and members of the local community attended a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony. Dr. Jain anticipates working closely with Executive Director Jennifer Smith in the near future to continue their expansion plans.
“We are excited that Human BioSciences sees the value of operating in Berkeley County and will try to connect them with local resource partners to help with staffing and other operational needs,” says Smith. “Not only is this expansion significant for the local economy, but it’s a massive step forward for wound care for millions of people worldwide.”
Human BioSciences brought over some team members from Maryland, but the company will need to hire locally soon. “Our factory is here, so we want to hire people who are here,” says Dr. Jain.
While the products sold by Human BioSciences are life-changing, the process of manufacturing and selling them is fairly straightforward. The company has designed its operations with simplicity in mind, so entry-level staff can be trained to operate the machines safely. This means the Human BioSciences hiring team is looking for people who care about what they do and are eager to make a difference in wound-care options.
“We want people to take ownership of their work,” says Dr. Jain. “We want them to be invested in what they do and how they help patients who use our products.”
